Community & Accountability

This year has started off fast—both literally and figuratively. Over the past few months, I’ve worked hard to stay disciplined and focused while navigating my professional transition from one school district to another. For the most part, I’ve been consistent with my workouts and water intake, though less so with my nutrition and sleep. Life has been “life-ing,” but honestly, I would not have it any other way.

Through it all, I have learned so much about myself, which has helped me stay consistent. Of course, there have been moments when I’ve reverted to old, unhealthy habits. But the great thing is, I now know how to reset and get back to the life changes I have committed to.

To be fully transparent, I’ve experienced weight fluctuations over the past few months—not all muscle, either. People have asked if it’s due to stress, but it’s not. Yes, the work is challenging, and some days are harder than others. But the reality is simple: I know what to do, and sometimes I just don’t do it. For example, when I prep my meals and carry my water, I’m far more likely to make healthy choices than when I resort to fast food between meetings. It’s the small, intentional actions that keep me on track.

This past month, I have made significant changes to my eating and sleeping habits, and it’s already made a difference. I have also had to come to terms with a tough reality: I’m getting older. My body does not recover the way it did when I was younger, so I have to be mindful of what I eat and practice true moderation. While I don’t diet, I am intentional about fueling my body in ways that support my goals.

Another major lesson I’ve learned—perhaps the biggest blessing—is the importance of community. For years, I chose to work out alone or with family. I’ve always been private about my fitness journey because I know I’m doing it for myself. While I’ve seen growth, I’m human, and I sometimes compare myself to others or feel frustrated for not being further along in my journey.

However, these past few weeks have reminded me of how far I’ve come and the opportunities still ahead. Recently, I met some incredible women from our local running club. One of my accountability partners was visiting and encouraged me to introduce myself and connect with them. It felt a little crazy at first—I’d seen these same people weekly but had kept to myself during my long runs.

The following weekend, I took a leap and joined the run club at a local park. (Joining a run club had been on my “50 Things Before 50” list, so I checked that off!) That run turned out to be one of my best in a long time. While I couldn’t quite keep up with the group I joined, I improved my pace, tackled the hills, and felt incredible. The encouragement from others, along with the accountability and shared journey, was exactly what I needed. Since then, I’ve continued building endurance and strength, and I feel more confident as I prepare for my next half marathon.

I’m excited to see how much my body and mind can accomplish. I’m also encouraged to share this journey because many of you serve as not only my community but also my accountability partners. A special shout-out to those who’ve told me how my story has helped inspire change in your own lives. Please know we’re in this together!

As we move through the spring semester, I encourage—and challenge—you to make a commitment to yourself. Prioritize rest, exercise, hydration, and sleep. These small, intentional changes will help you better serve others while taking care of yourself.

Let’s continue to #InspireExcellence together!
